Tigers Match Best Start With Oberlin Win

OBERLIN, Ohio — The Wittenberg men's lacrosse team rolled to its fifth-straight win with a 14-5 victory over host Oberlin College Saturday to pick up another North Coast Athletic Conference win, moving to 7-2 overall and 2-0 in NCAC action.

 

By reaching the 7-2 overall record, the Tigers have matched their best start since the program was reestablished as a varsity sport in 1983. Wittenberg also started the 1999 season 7-2.

Junior attackman Matt Lord (Pickerington, Ohio/North) led all players with four goals on the day, adding an assist, while four players each posted two goals on the day. They included juniors Matt Snider (Cookeville, Tenn./Cookeville)Brady Christensen (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and Mitch Cohagan (Pickerington, Ohio/North) and senior Ted Winders (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township).

Snider posted one assist and one groundball while Christensen picked up three groundballs and Winders nabbed one. Freshman midfielder Alex Previte (Dublin, Ohio/Coffman) rounded out the scoring figures with one goal.

Junior defensive midfielder Danny Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) notched one assist and split a three-way team lead with four groundballs, sharing the title with sophomore defenders Michael Cocking (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) and Charles Harreys (Essex, Conn./Valley Regional).

Junior Mark DeOliveira (East Hanover, NJ/East Hanover) manned the goal for all 60 minutes, making 11 saves against five goals allowed to pick up the win. Wittenberg launched a volley of shots numbering 38 at DeOliveira's counterpart in the other goal, while Oberlin shot 27 times.

The Tigers owned a 6-0 lead after one quarter and pushed it to 8-1 after two. Out of the break, Wittenberg picked up four goals to make it a 12-1 game heading to the fourth, where Oberlin scored four of their five goals against the Tigers' two.

Wittenberg brings the winning streak home for a Tuesday, April 13, matchup with Denison, beginning at 7 p.m.
