Conference Play Continues To Be Tough For Tigers With Loss To Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio - After keeping a tight game through the first quarter, the Wittenberg Tigers allowed six goals in the second quarter of a contest with the Kenyon College Lords, eventually dropping the game by a 16-5 count and moving to 4-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

After one period, Kenyon led by a slim 3-2 margin, thanks to some stiff defense from the Tigers. But in the second quarter the Lords opened up for six while the Tigers only found the goal once. The third quarter ended with each team scoring twice, and the fourth quarter again swung in Kenyon's favor, as they scored five while holding the Red & White to no goals.

Offensively, the highlights for Wittenberg were topped with freshman attacker Matt Lord (Pickerington, Ohio/North) scoring twice in the first quarter and once in the third to lead the Tigers in the category. He got to the net unassisted twice and received help from sophomore midfielder Jeff Capella (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) for one goal.

Capella also picked up an assist on a goal by sophomore attacker Mike Reinberg (St. Louis, Mo./DeSmet Jesuit) in the second quarter, while sophomore midfielderDanny Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) scored unassisted while a man down in the third quarter.

The five Tiger goals came on a 26 attempts, while Kenyon outshot the Tigers with 46 tries. Wittenberg also failed to convert on three man-up oppurtunities. Tiger freshman Mark DeOliveira (East Hanover, NJ/East Hanover) turned away 12 Kenyon shots during his 45 minutes in goal, while senior Andy Shively (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) saved four shots in his 15 minute appearance.

The Tigers will next take on non-conference opponent Adrian, in a home contest on April 9 at 7 p.m.
