Tigers Stumble At St. Vincent In 11-9 Loss

LATROBE, Pa. — The long trip to Pennsylvania was an unsuccessful one for the Wittenberg Tigers as they dropped an 11-9 decision at St. Vincent. 

In the process, the Tigers' three-game win streak was snapped, while St. Vincent notched its first victory of the season to improve to 1-2. Wittenberg gets back into North Coast Athletic Conference action Wednesday at preseason favorite Denison.

Wittenberg was led offensively by the freshman tandem of Brian Welton (Germantown, Tenn./Houston) and Tim Gates (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover), both of whom finished with three total points. Freshman Ted Winders (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township)added two assists, junior Jon Van Vranken (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) chipped in with a pair of goals and freshman Jeff Capella (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) rounded out the high scorers with a goal and an assist.

The Tigers were strong in man-up situations with five goals in a whopping nine opportunities, while Wittenberg stopped St. Vincent on three of their four man-up chances. In goal, junior Andy Shively (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) recorded 15 saves.
