Wittenberg Defeats Oberlin, 13-4

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers came on strong in their first home game since their Spring Break trip to Florida, capturing a 13-4 victory over visiting Oberlin.

The win evened the Tigers' 2006 record at 2-2. It was the 19th straight Wittenberg victory over the Yeomen, dating back to 1996.

The Tigers scored the first five goals of the game while shutting Oberlin out in the first quarter. Sophomore Jon Van Vranken led the offensive onslaught, pouring in three straight goals in the first quarter. After Oberlin scored twice to start the second quarter, the Tigers put the game out of reach with six straight tallies. The two teams split the final four scores covering the last 17 minutes of the game.

Van Vranken led all scorers in the game, while junior Travis Moore added two goals and an assist to the winning effort. Also finishing with a three-point game was sophomore Brandon Hulett, who chipped in with a goal and two assists.

Wittenberg outshot Oberlin 45-26 and had the edge in ground balls, 41-32. Leading the charge defensively was junior Brandon Schwind, who led all players with 12 ground balls. Junior Pat Garlock was credited with 13 saves, and sophomore Andy Shively relieved him in the fourth quarter to record two more saves.
