Tigers Fall To St. Mary's, 20-5

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - The long Spring Break trip to Maryland did not have a happy ending for the Wittenberg Tigers, who dropped a 20-5 non-conference decision to St. Mary's on Wednesday afternoon at Seahawk Stadium.

The Seahawks improved to 2-3 overall on the season, with all three losses coming to teams currently ranked in the top 12 nationally. Wittenberg fell to 0-2 on the young season after an unexpected eight-day layoff due to the postponement of Saturday's game at St. Vincent due to snow in Pennsylvania.

The Tigers answered with the Seahawks' first goal of the game as senior attacker Trevor Carlson found the back of the net on a pass from sophomore attacker Adam Morrison early in the first half. However, St. Mary's blitzed Wittenberg with a 7-0 run and pushed the lead out to a commanding 11-2 advantage by halftime. Wittenberg's only other goal of the first half came from junior Cory Windle without an assist.

The lead extended to 17-4 after three quarters of play, and both teams emptied their benches in the fourth quarter as the game was well out of reach. Windle added a goal in the second half and sophomore attacker Sammy Hong chipped in with a goal and an assist, both in the final 30 minutes. Sophomore Travis Moore tacked on the Tigers' other goal and Morrison finished with two assists to lead Wittenberg.

Sophomore goalkeeper Pat Garlock started and played the first three quarters in net for the Tigers. Garlock allowed 17 goals with 15 saves while facing 47 total shots. Freshman Andy Shively played the final 15 minutes in net. He allowed three goals with two saves on 10 total shots.

Wittenberg will try to find its way into the win column for the first time in 2005 on Sunday on the final day of the Spring Break trip. The Tigers will square off with Randolph-Macon in Richmond, Va., starting at noon.
