J.J. Searls is in his second season as Wittenberg's golf coach, while also serving as the full-time assistant men's basketball coach. In his first year, the Tigers finished fourth in the North Coast Athletic Conference, the team's highest finish in one of the best golf conferences in the nation since 1996. Searls left Wittenberg in 2002.

Searls, a Lancaster, Ohio native, received his undergraduate degree in secondary education from Ohio University in 1995. While at Ohio Searls served as a student assistant to former Tiger and current Ohio basketball coach Larry Hunter. Searls began his coaching career at NCAA Division I Manhattan College. Following his one year at Manhattan, Searls coached for two seasons at Division III Franklin College.

Prior to last season Searls joined Springfield native and head coach Jayson Gee at the University of Charleston. This past spring, Gee recognized Searls' outstanding contribution to the Charleston basketball program by appointing him to the title of associate head coach. Searls and his wife Julie reside in Springfield.
