No. 15 Men's Golf shoots 4-under-par on Day 2 of NCAA Division III Championships, advances to final two days

BOULDER CITY, Nev. — The No. 15 Wittenberg men's golf team shot a 4-under-par 284 in Wednesday's second round of the NCAA Division III Championships, making the cut by two strokes to advance to the final two days of play. The Tigers' score marked the third-best of any team on the day.
The Basics
- Venues: Boulder Creek Golf Club - Boulder City, Nev., Par 72, Yardage: 7,377; The Legacy Golf Club - Boulder City, Nev., Par 72, Yardage: 7,077
- Half the field played at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Tuesday's first round while the other half played at The Legacy Golf Club. The teams switched courses for Wednesday's second round.
- The tournament is hosted by UNLV and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
- Wittenberg is ranked No. 15 nationally in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek NCAA Division III Coaches Poll, which was released on May 3, and is No. 16 in the latest NCAA Division III Scoreboard rankings, powered by Clippd, which was released on Monday.
- The Tigers made the 43-team field as an at-large selection after finishing as the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships runner-up to Kenyon. Senior J.F. Aber (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) was the individual medalist at the NCACs.
- Wittenberg, the 2017 Division III national champion, is making its third straight appearance, and 29th overall, in the NCAA Championships. They finished seventh in 2022 at Mission Inn Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., and 13th last year at Keene Trace Golf Club in Nicholasville, Ky.
- The team and individual champions will be determined after 72 holes of play or the conclusion of the last fully completed round.
- The initial field consisted of 221 competitors. At the end of 36 holes of competition on Wednesday, the field was cut to the top 18 teams and top six individuals not on one of those teams.
- No. 3 Carnegie Mellon is the defending champion.
The Tournament - Day 2
- Wittenberg began play in Wednesday's second round at 7:45 a.m. Pacific Time at Boulder Creek Golf Club and posted the 4-under-par score to position itself to end the day in the top 18 with a two-round score of a 12-over-par 304-284—588.
- The Tigers ended the day just above the cut line, finishing in a two-way tie with No. 12 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for 17th place for the final two spots in the reduced field. They sit just six strokes back of a top-10 spot.
- The Tigers improved 16 spots after ending Tuesday's opening round at The Legacy Golf Club in 33rd place, 10 strokes behind 18th place.
- No. 18 Redlands leads the team standings after two rounds with a 13-under-par 275-288—563. No. 23 Kenyon is second at 11-under-par, No. 1 Methodist is third at 10-under-par, No. 3 Carnegie Mellon is fourth at 7-under-par, and Schreiner is fifth at 4-under-par.
- Aber led the Tigers on Wednesday, finishing with a 4-under-par 68. Junior Jake Yarbrough (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) shot a 3-under-par 69, sophomore Mark Sulek (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes) shot an even-par 72, senior Nicklaus Pidgeon (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch) shot a 3-over-par 75, and junior Joshua Wright (Wadsworth, Ohio/Akron Hoban) shot a 13-over-par 85.
- Pidgeon posted a pair of eagles in the second round, one each on the par-5 fifth hole and par-5 13th hole.
- Aber recorded a team-high seven birdies on the day to go with five from Yarbrough.
- In the two-day individual standings, Aber is tied for 31st with an even-par 76-68—144, Yarbrough is tied for 44th with a 1-over-par 76-69—145, Sulek is tied for 65th with a 4-over-par 78-70—148, Pidgeon is tied for 99th with a 7-over-par 76-75—151, and Wright is 213th with a 27-over-par 86-85—171.
- Aber, Sulek, Yarbrough and Pidgeon each shot 4-over-par in Tuesday's first round to end the day tied for 121st. Wright was tied for 215th at 14-over-par.
- Oglethorpe's Michael O'Sullivan leads the individual standings after 36 holes with an 8-under-par 66-70—136. There is a three-way tie for second place at 7-under-par.
