No. 15 Men's Golf sits tied for eighth on Day 1 of Hampden-Sydney Tiger Invitational

PINEHURST, N.C. — The No. 15 Wittenberg men's golf team is tied for eighth place of 18 teams after Sunday's first round in a loaded field at the Hampden-Sydney Tiger Invitational.

The Basics

  • Venue: Forest Creek Golf Club North Course - Pinehurst, N.C., Par 72, Yardage: 6,925
  • The tournament features 12 of the top 25 teams in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek NCAA Division III Coaches Poll, which was released March 1. Joining No. 15 Wittenberg are No. 1 Methodist, No. 5 Lynchburg, No. 6 Carnegie Mellon, No. 10 Washington & Lee, No. 12 Sewanee, No. 13 Babson, No. 16 Averett, No. 20 Huntingdon, No. 21 Guilford, No. 24 Greensboro and No. 25 Kenyon.

The Tournament - Day 1

  • Wittenberg shot a 13-over-par 301 in Sunday's opening round and is tied with No. 12 Sewanee and No. 25 Kenyon for eighth place. The Tigers are currently ahead of No. 5 Lynchburg, No. 13 Babson and No. 24 Greensboro.
  • The Tigers are just two shots back of a tie for sixth with No. 16 Averett and No. 21 Guilford and three shots back of fifth-place Rhodes.
  • No. 20 Huntingdon leads after the first round with an even-par 288, two shots ahead of No. 6 Carnegie Mellon in second. No. 1 Methodist is five shots back in third.
  • Individually, sophomore Mark Sulek (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes) led the Tigers on Sunday with a 1-over-par 73 and is in a seven-way tie for 15th in the 90-man field.
  • Senior J.F. Aber (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) is tied for 22nd with a 2-over-par 74.
  • Junior Joshua Wright (Wadsworth, Ohio/Akron Hoban) is tied for 42nd with a 4-over-par 76.
  • Freshman Owen Cotterman (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) is tied for 55th with a 6-over-par 78.
  • Senior Nicklaus Pidgeon (Homeworth, Ohio/West Branch) is tied for 59th with a 7-over-par 79.
  • Guilford's Parker Cumbea and Averett's Caleb Kimbrough are tied for the lead after shooting a 2-under-par 70 in Sunday's opening round.
