No. 6 Men’s Golf Wins 2nd-Straight At Battle at the Brook

For the second week in a row, the sixth-ranked Wittenberg Men's Golf Team picked up a team title, this time claiming the top spot at Ohio Wesleyan's Battle at the Brook in Sandusky, Ohio.
For the second week in a row, the sixth-ranked Wittenberg Men's Golf Team picked up a team title, this time claiming the top spot at Ohio Wesleyan's Battle at the Brook in Sandusky, Ohio.

Sandusky, Ohio The sixth-ranked Wittenberg University Men's Golf Team kept it's early season momentum rolling this weekend as the Tigers won the team title at Ohio Wesleyan's Cameo Pizza-Battle at the Brook, played at the par-71, 6,503-yard Plum Brook Country Club in Sandusky. Wittenberg has now opened the season with back-to-back team titles after also claiming the top prize at last weekend's Transylvania Invitational in central Kentucky. 

The Tigers took all 11 players on the roster to the event, with the grouping of seniors Ryan Mallette and Cameron Willis, juniors Christopher Dunne and Daniel Castleberry, and rookie Evan DiSanto earning the team win with a combined score of 578 (284-294). NCAC-rival Ohio Wesleyan finished second overall with 582 strokes (291-291), followed by Washington & Jefferson (601), Kalamazoo (615), Capital (626) and Mt. St. Joseph (647). 

Individually, all five of Wittenberg's starting five finished in the top-10 of the 48-golfer field, led by DiSanto posting his best finish in a collegiate event by finishing in a tie for third-place with OWU's Luke Boerner. DiSanto fired a two-over par in the opening round on Saturday, before exploding with a four-under 69 in the final round on Sunday to finish the 36-hole event at even-par overall with 142 total strokes. 

Willis finished two strokes behind DiSanto in the individual standings in solo fifth with a two-day score of 144 (71-73), while Dunne tie with W&J's Garrett Barilar for the sixth position with a 36-hole score of 146 (71-75). Castleberry rounded out the Tigers' scoring five by finishing as part of a four-way tie for ninth-place with a final tally of 148 (71-77). 

The final six Wittenberg golfers competed as individuals at the event, led by sophomores Will Birkholz and Cameron Lloyd tying for 18th with 36-hole scores of 152.  

Senior Curtis Salmans was one-stroke behind the sophomore duo in 21st with a 153 (76-77), freshman Christian Tomak tied for 26th with two additional players with a 158 (77-81). Finally, the freshmen tandem of William McDavid and AJ Cherubini shared the 29th place in the final standings with two-day scores of 159. 

The Tigers will look to add to their early season resume next weekend in the Sunshine State as Wittenberg will travel to West Palm Beach, Florida for the 2019-20 NCAA Division III Men's Golf NCAA Preview.
