After four years of collegiate competition, Mark David Wright has participated in at least 50 percent of team competitions and averaged under a 79, while maintaining a minimum career grade point average of 3.2.
Wittenberg University’s men’s golf team won its first NCAA Division III National Championship, and Garrett Brickley claimed a tie for first place individually at Mission Inn Resort in Howey in the Hills, Florida on Friday.
Wittenberg men’s golf fired a third-round 299 on Thursday, as the Tigers made their move, claiming the top spot atop the leaderboard amongst the 18 teams remaining.
Wittenberg men’s golf finished the first 18 holes of the 2017 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship tied for sixth place with a 10-over 298 on Tuesday. Cameron Willis shined for the Tigers on day one, as the freshman is currently tied for second individually after firing a two-under 70.
The men’s championship is the eighth straight for the Tigers, as the team put together a 54-hole score of 878 (284-293-301). Wittenberg’s women’s title is their third straight, with a 54-hole score of 944 (321-319-304).
Following pre-championship balloting by eight of the nine league coaches, Wittenberg has been tabbed as the favorites heading into the 2017 NCAC Men’s Golf Championship Series. The Tigers, who have won seven-straight league titles, collected eight first-place votes to top the poll with 72 total points
In a field of all Division I competitors, Wittenberg men’s golf not only held their own, but led the pack at Monday and Tuesday’s Wright State Invitational. The Tigers fired a +15 1080 at the Par 71, 6,666 yard Miami Valley Golf Club, finishing atop the leaderboard as a team.
Wittenberg men’s golf finished in first place at the Members Invitational hosted by the Golf Club at Indigo Run on Thursday. The Tiger’s 294 as a team ended up being nine strokes better than Davis & Elkins College, and 13 better than the University of South Carolina at Beaufort.
Wittenberg finished four strokes ahead of Methodist University, and two strokes behind Centre College on the weekend. Emory came out on top of the leaderboard, carding a 596 as a team, while Lagrange College and Oglethrope finished second and third.
The Tigers took on many top teams at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. Senior Garrett Brickley led the way for the Tigers' third place finish.
Wittenberg not only finished in first as a team over the weekend, but Colin Laszlo, Sam Stilwell, and Garrett Brickely finished one, two and three individually.
The Wittenberg Tigers ranked among the best in the nation throughout the 2015-16 season, finishing third in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the second straight year.
