Tigers Move Up Leaderboard On Day 2 At NCAA Tournament

GREENSBORO, NC - The Wittenberg Tigers have been the model of consistency throughout the 2014-15 season. Form has held through the first two days of the 2015 NCAA Division III Tournament, putting Wittenberg in contention for its first-ever national championship as the competition hits the midway point.

Wittenberg moved from ninth place after the first round to a tie for fifth place on Day 2 with a team score of 293. The Tigers have posted a two-day total of 590, just nine strokes off the pace set by Redlands.

Berry is second at 584, followed by Methodist in third with 586 and Illinois Wesleyan in fourth with 589. Wittenberg and LaGrange are tied for fifth with matching totals of 590.

"This team just continues to play steady golf with high-quality numbers," said Head Coach Jeff Roope. "From top to bottom, they all have the ability to make meaningful contributions, and that is so important to playing good team golf."

For the second straight day, the Tigers were led by an unlikely player as senior Jared Wissinger (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) stepped up with a two-under par 70 on the East Course at Grandover Resort. Wissinger posted the best score of the day on the course, which propelled him into 20th place overall with a two-day total of 146.

Senior John Chaney (Gates Mills, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) is right behind in 25th with a score of 147, followed by sophomore Sam Stilwell (Sterling, Va./Dominion) in 28th with a 148. Senior Alex Andrews (Kirtland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) is the next Tiger in 65th place at 152, and junior Sam Geise (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) rounds things out with a two-day score of 154, good for 95th place out of 210 golfers in the field.

Wittenberg is among 15 teams remaining in the tournament after making the cut for the fifth time in the last six years at the NCAA Division III Tournament. First tee time for the Tigers on Day 3 of the tournament is set for 8:25 a.m.
