Tigers Top Strong Field At Season-Opening Transylvania Invite

LEXINGTON, Ky. - After winning seven tournaments a year ago en route to a fifth-place finish in the 2014 NCAA Division III Tournament, the Wittenberg Tigers maintained their momentum to start the 2014-15 season with a first-place finish in the Transylvania Fall Invitational.

Playing the Wildcat Course at the University Club of Kentucky, the Tigers were a model of consistency over the tournament's two rounds. Wittenberg led after posting a team score of 292 in the first round, and the Tigers followed up with a 293 in the second round to finish with a total score of 585.

Centre placed second with a 590, followed by Spalding at 604, Ferrum at 608 and RPI at 611. Centre posted the best round of the with a 288 on the second day, but Wittenberg was the only to team to break 300 in both rounds. The Tigers' two-day score of 585 ranks 11th in program history.

Individually, the Tigers were paced by senior Alex Andrews (Kirtland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) with a two-round total of 143 to place second. He was followed by seniors John Chaney (Gates Mills, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) and Jared Wissinger (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) with matching totals of 148, good for a fourth-place tie.

Rounding things out for Wittenberg were a pair of first-time entrants into the starting lineup. Sophomore Mark David Wright (Westerville, Ohio/Tree of Life) carded a two-round score of 149 to place seventh and sophomore Garrett Brickley (Pickerington, Ohio/North) was right behind with a 150 to finish eighth.
