GREENSBORO, NC - Day 3 of the 2014 NCAA Division III Men's Golf Tournament turned out to be a soggy mess, and the Wittenberg Tigers found themselves running in place. One of just three teams to complete the entire round before play was suspended for the day due to inclement weather, the Tigers ended the day where they started - in 13th place out of the 15 teams that made the cut.
Wittenberg shot a team score of 304 on the challenging East Course of the Grandover Resort, which was playing longer than its par-72, 7,210-yard set-up due to heavy rains in the Greensboro area. The Tigers' 16-over-par round puts Wittenberg 37 strokes above par through three rounds - at the moment 25 strokes behind first-place Schreiner, which leads Oglethorpe by two.
Eleven of the 12 teams that still must complete the third round are ahead of the Tigers in the current standings. Tee times for those teams will start at 7:30 a.m. Friday, with the fourth round set to begin immediately afterward.
Wittenberg was one of the first teams to tee off on Thursday, starting at 7 a.m. The round was halted at one point for four hours due to thunderstorms, and then it was stopped for good in the late afternoon with most of the teams still midway through the round.
The Tigers were paced on Day 3 by senior David Wetterich (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle), who carded his best round of the tournament, a 74 that moved him into 60th place with a total of 230. He was followed in the third round by junior Alex Andrews (Kirtland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy), who finished with a 75. He stands 27th overall with a three-round total of 222.
Junior John Chaney (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) was next with a 77. His overall score and placement matches Wetterich in 60th place. Senior Ben Hogenkamp (Minster, Ohio/Minster) was the final scorer in the third round with a 78 to stand 37th overall with a score of 225.
