Tigers Crush Competition At DePauw Small College Classic

DANVILLE, Ind. - The Wittenberg Tigers put the finishing touches on a phenomenal fall 2013 season with dominating 27-stroke victory at the DePauw Small College Classic.

Wittenberg competed in five tournaments during the fall portion of the 2013-14 campaign, finishing in the top three each time. The Tigers finished with a rush, following up on a first-place finish in the prestigious Gordin Classic with a tremendous performance at DePauw.

Wittenberg's first round score of 290 at the par-71, 6695-yard Deer Creek Golf Course in Clayton, Ind., ranks as the ninth-best in program history. The Tigers followed that with a 296 at the par-72, 7058-yard Twin Bridges Golf Club in Danville, Ind., to finish with a score of 586. The host team finished second with a two-day total of 613, followed by Wooster at 615.

Individually, junior Jared Wissinger (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson) continued his hot streak, earning medalist honors with rounds of 68 and 71 to finish four-under-par 139. His 68 is just two strokes off the program record, while his two-round score ranks fourth in Wittenberg men's golf history.

Wissinger's closest pursuer was senior Ben Hogenkamp (Minster, Ohio/Minster), who carded rounds of 70 and 73 to finish second at 143. Senior David Wetterich (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) was next among the starting five, checking in with a total of 150 to place sixth.

Rounding out the team scorers were juniors Alex Andrews (Kirtland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) and John Chaney (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Gilmour Academy). They had matching scores both days to tie for 17th with total scores of 155.

Seven other Tigers competed as individuals in the field, and all of them performed very well, placing in the top 42 out of 78 golfers entered. Leading the charge was freshman Garrett Brickley (Pickerington, Ohio/North), who finished third in his first collegiate competition. He posted scores of 72 and 75.

Freshman Mark David Wright (Columbus, Ohio/Tree of Life) finished 11th with a score of 152, followed by sophomore JP Holliday (Calgary, Alberta/Central Memorial) in 17th at 155, senior Jack Uecker (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) in 25th at 156, freshman Sam Stilwell (Sterling, Va./Dominion) in 29th at 157, sophomore Sam Geise (Springboro, Ohio/Springboro) in 37th at 159, and senior Tyler Yaple (Dublin, Ohio/Jerome) in 42nd at 161.
