Tigers Finish Third In Spring Break Tourney

HILTON HEAD, SC — The Wittenberg University men's golf team hosted a new tournament called The Members Invitational at The Golf Club at Indigo Run in Hilton Head, S.C. and finished third in a challenging four-team field.

The team score is somewhat misleading, however, considering the fact that senior Ben Smith (North Bend, Ohio/Elder) was the tournament medalist with a two-under-par 70. He won the one-day event by a resounding three strokes even after bogeying the final two holes, shortly after posting an eagle 2 on the par-4 15th hole.

Smith, however, was playing as an individual in the event. Interestingly, if the top four Tigers playing as individuals were given a team score, it would have been a 303, good for second place. South Carolina Beaufort won the team competition with a score of 298.

Officially, Wittenberg finished with a team score of 319, led by freshman Alex Andrews (Kirtland, Ohio/Gilmour Academy) with a 76, good for a sixth-place tie with senior Ricky Boerner (Hilliard, Ohio/Davidson), who was among the Tiger individuals. Also breaking 80 in the competition were sophomore Ben Hogenkamp (Minster, Ohio/Minster) with a 78 to place ninth, and juniors Jonny Price (Dublin, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) and Bradley Shepherd (Dublin, Ohio/Watterson) with matching 79s to finish 12th.

The Tigers will return to action at the Camp LeJeune Championship at Paradise Point/Scarlet Camp in LeJeune, NC, March 30-April 1.
