Wittenberg Blisters Hallowed Granville Golf Club To Capture 20-Stroke Win at Denison Fall Invitational

GRANVILLE, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers kicked off a promising 2009-10 season with a tremendous performance at the Denison Fall Invitational, carding a first round 291 and a second round 296 to run away from the field for a 20-stroke victory at Granville Golf Club.

Junior Bleu George (Lancaster, Ohio/Fisher Catholic) made his Wittenberg debut a memorable one as he carded a sizzling opening round 66 - matching 33s on the front and back side on the strength of eight birdies. He added a 70 on Day 2 to pick up medalist honors by five strokes. His one-round score of 66 and his two-round total of 136 are school records, bettering the single round record by two strokes and the two-round record by three.

George was joined below par by just one other golfer in the field in the opening round - his teammate, freshman Craig Osterbrock (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington). He followed the 71 in his Wittenberg debut Saturday with another 71 to place third with a 142.

All five Tiger players finished below 80 both days at Denison. Sophomore Ben Smith (North Bend, Ohio/Elder) added a 76 to stand 10th after Day 1 and a 77 on Day 2 to land 10th overall. Sophomore Ricky Boerner (Hilliard, Ohio/Watterson)rounded out the scorers with matching 78s, good for 14th place in the final standings.

Wittenberg topped perennial national powerhouse DePauw by 20 strokes and third-place Baldwin-Wallace by 23 in the final standings. Like George's individual scores, the team's total of 587 is the program's best ever, and the 291 and 296 were both better than the single round scores ever posted by a Wittenberg team previously.
