Tigers Top Field At First 2009-10 NCAC Championship Series Event

DELAWARE, Ohio — The Wittenberg Tigers made it 2-for-2 on the young 2009-10 season, capturing the top spot in the opening North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Championship Series event, hosted by Ohio Wesleyan at Delaware Golf Club.

The 13-stroke win over the host Battling Bishops, who have won three straight NCAC titles and seven of the last eight, came a week after the Tigers finished first by a wide margin over perennial national powerhouse DePauw at the Denison Fall Invitational. Wittenberg steps outside Great Lakes Region play next weekend at the Rhodes Invitational in Mississippi.

Sophomore Ricky Boerner (Hilliard, Ohio/Watterson) captured first place in the Ohio Wesleyan Fall Invitational, carding rounds of 70 and 76 for a 146. That score was equalled by Tom Harman of Ohio Wesleyan.

Three strokes behind in a three-way tie for third place was freshman Craig Osterbrock (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington), who posted scores of 73 and 76 for a 149. Next up for the Tigers was sophomore Jordan Millice (Cable, Ohio/Triad), who scored a two-round total of 151, good for sixth place. Millice was playing as an individual in this competition, thus his scores did not count toward Wittenberg's team totals either day.

Rounding out Wittenberg's top finishers, sophomore Ben Smith (North Bend, Ohio/Elder) faltered a bit after his opening round 72 but still finished in a tie for ninth place with a 153. That was matched by junior Bleu George (Lancaster, Ohio/Fisher Catholic), who recovered from a first-day 82 to post the lowest score on Sunday (71).
