The Wittenberg University men's golf team may be poised for a
breakthrough in the rugged North Coast Athletic Conference. With a
10-man roster stocked with talent and experience, thanks in part to
the return of five letterwinners and the addition of four standout
freshmen, the Tigers are shooting for their first NCAA Division III
Tournament berth since 1991.
Leading the charge is junior Andy Bonar (Lancaster,
Ohio/Lancaster), who has earned All-NCAC honors in each of
his first two seasons in the Red & White. Bonar has led the
team in scoring average each of the last two years.
Senior Adam Knowlton (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee)
is expected to join Bonar at the top of the lineup again in 2004. A
three-year letterwinner, Knowlton has shown steady improvement
during his collegiate career, posting a career-best 76 in the fall
2003 season. He has his sights set on attaining his first
all-conference recognition.
Next are three outstanding sophomores who gained valuable
experience and scored extremely well in 2002-03. Dane
Sandridge (Westfield Center, Ohio/Cloverleaf),
Kristopher Schmelzer (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster)
and Clinton Anderson (Mechanicsburg,
Ohio/Mechanicsburg) all posted scoring averages between 80
and 81 in their inaugural collegiate campaigns, hopefully setting
the stage for some great things during their careers. Anderson came
on particularly strong at the NCAC Tournament, earning first-team
all-conference with his best scores of the season.
The rest of the roster is comprised of four talented freshmen and
sophomore Mark Sanders (Hamilton, Ohio/Badin), who
missed last season due to an injury. The first-year players are
Scott Aker (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee),
Corey Alshouse (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake),
Chuck Domenie (Old Saybrook, Conn./St. Xavier) and
Andy Heskett (Springfield, Ohio/Kenton Ridge).
Aker is the reigning Springfield City Amateur champion.
