April 30th, 2004: Men's Golf Review

Scott Aker

The Wittenberg men's and women's golf teams are closing the 2003-04 season strong. The women concluded the campaign with a seventh-place finish at Baldwin-Wallace last week, while the men posted one of their best finishes of the season with a fourth at Ohio Wesleyan's Strimer Invitational.

The men defeated six other North Coast Athletic Conference squads at OWU, including nationally ranked Denison. The Tigers have clearly positioned themselves for a run at the upcoming NCAC Championships, which are hosted by the Battling Bishops. Three nationally ranked teams, OWU, Denison and Allegheny, headline the event at Dornoch Golf Club in Delaware.

Freshman Scott Aker (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) took medalist honors for the first time in his collegiate career, sharing first place with a mark of 149. Junior Andy Bonar (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) was also strong on the weekend as he carded scores of 79 and 72 (one over par) for a third-place total of 151. Bonar, a two-time All-NCAC selection, put up the tournament's low round with that 72 on Oakhaven Golf Club's long, open course.

For the spring season, Aker and Bonar have identical scoring averages of 75.9 in nine rounds. Sophomore Clinton Anderson (Mechanicsburg, Ohio/Mechanicsburg) also carries a scoring average below 80 strokes per round at 79.7.

On the women's side, senior Erin Mowrey (Toledo, Ohio/St. Ursula) was at the head of the Tigers' pack, as usual. In a tourney that was shortened to one day due to rain, Mowrey took seventh place at Baldwin-Wallace with a solid 89. She was followed by freshman Erica Bodnar (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and sophomore Ann Delaney (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Buffalo Grove), who each carded 99, and sophomore Alex Pressler (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich./Grosse Pointe South), who checked in with a 102.

Mowrey finished the season with a stellar scoring average of 93.5 in 14 rounds to easily lead the team. Delaney finished with an average of 101.6 and Bodnar capped her season with an average of 103.6.
