Meadville, Pa. – The No. 14 Wittenberg men's basketball team breezed by the Gators of Allegheny College 92-67 in the Tiger's first North Coast Athletic Conference road trip of the 2018-19 season. The Tigers improve to 7-1 on the season and remain unbeaten in NCAC action at 3-0. The Red and White flourished on offense as 12 different Tigers found their way into the scoring column by the end of the night. Wittenberg racked up a 47 percent field goal mark from the field against the Gators, as the Tigers opened the game knocking down 17 of 30 attempts from the floor in the first half.
Game Breakdown
Wittenberg took a commanding lead into the half, maintaining a 50-29 advantage after the first 20 minutes of action. The Tigers would hold their largest lead of the game just minutes into the second half, the Red and White maintained a 27-point advantage over Allegheny. After Mitchell Balser went off in the first half, tallying 17 of his 19 total points. The lone Tiger senior started the game by knocking down his first six of nine looks from the field, which included converting on four of six from deep range. Leading the Wittenberg scoring effort was sophomore sharpshooter James Johnson logging 23 points in 21 minutes for the Red and White against the Gators. Johnson scored 21 of his 23 points by converting on seven of eight attempts from beyond the arc, finishing the night 8 of 13 from the floor. Johnson would also add five rebounds an assist and a blocked shot. Wittenberg would go on to hold Allegheny to just 32 percent from field, allowing just 24 of 75 Gator shot attempts to fall through the basket.
Who Stood Out
As the Tigers finished with four players in double-figures, led Johnson and Balser. Connor Seipel and Ridge Young each finished their trip to Allegheny with 10 points. Seipel closed out the game one rebound shy of another double-double, reeling in nine rebounds and dishing out two assists. Young would finish with two rebounds and two assists on the night. Jordan Pumroy, Jacob Bertemes, and Rashaad Ali-Shakir each tallied five rebounds for the Red and White.
