Wittenberg Closes Out Regular Season with Loss to Wooster

WOOSTER, Ohio—Wittenberg men's basketball concluded the 2016-17 regular season with a 99-71 loss to rival Wooster on Saturday night. Despite closing out the season with back-to-back loses to the top two teams in the league, Wittenberg secured themselves as the number four team in the league prior to Saturday's matchup. The Tigers found themselves up by as many as four points early on, but would go on to trail by as many as 32 late in the contest.  Offensively, Wittenberg was led by Cody Phillippi, who netted 23 points on a perfect ten-for-ten performance from the charity stripe. Wittenberg now plays host to the number five seed Hiram on Tuesday, February 21, at 7:30PM in Springfield.

GAME NOTES

  • With 16:30 remaining in the first half, Landon Hormann continued his hot –shooting from deep, as his three-pointer gave the Tigers an early 8-4 lead.
  • After surrendering the lead, Wittenberg would pull within five points after a made Shane Edwards jumper at the 10:22 mark of the first-half.
  • Jaelin Williams and Phillippi closed out the first-half for the Tigers with four consecutive free-throws, as the Tigers trailed 45-37 at the break.
  • Phillippi recorded an unassisted jumper with 13:54 remaining in regulation to cut the Fighting Scots lead to 66-44.
  • Chris Sloneker contributed off the bench for the Tigers, cashing in a layup at 4:57 to cut the Wooster lead to 89-64.
  • Mark Fair II got in the scoring column for the Tigers, recording the final Tiger bucket of the night as the Tigers fell 99-71.

KEY STATS

  • Wittenberg shot 44% from the floor as a team, while the Fighting Scots shot nearly 58% from the floor as a team in the contest.
  • The Tigers continued to get the ball inside at will, outscoring Wooster 36-32 in the paint in the loss.
