Wittenberg Hoops Knocks Off #9 Denison on the Road

GRANVILLE, Ohio—Wittenberg hoops met up with the Big Red of Denison for the second time in 2016-17 on Saturday, looking for a different outcome then their first meeting back in December that saw the Tigers fall 72-68 in overtime. The Tigers finished the job this time around in Granville, as Jaelin Williams made the play of the game, pinning the game winning layup with 1.2 seconds remaining in the game up against the backboard as the Tigers won 71-70. Denison led by as many as 16 in the game on Saturday, but the Tigers resiliency after halftime changed the entire complexion of the game, as Wittenberg came roaring back to score 44 points in the 20-minute period. Williams paced the Tigers with 23 points, as Chad Roy held down the low post with 14 points.

GAME NOTES

  • Roy scored the opening points for Tigers in the second half, as the red and white trailed 41-29 in the contest.
  • With 10:10 remaining, Williams drew a foul on a three pointer, cashing in on all three free throw attempts to put the Tigers within four at 51-47.
  • Roy connected on a jumper in the paint with 7:37 remaining to cut the Big Red lead to one point at 57-56.
  • Denison led by three with 1:37 remaining, before a Williams' jumper went through the bottom of the net to cut the Big Red lead to 70-69.
  • Shane Edwards kissed a floater high off the back board with :10 remaining in the contest, as the Tigers took the lead 71-70.
  • With 1.2 seconds remaining, Denison drew up an inbound play that put a guard in position to score a layup down the right side of the paint, but Williams came soaring in to pin the layup attempt against the backboard as time expired.
