Men's Basketball Drops Last Second Thriller to Alvernia

GETTYSBURG, PA—The Croci Era of Wittenberg hoops started off with a last second thriller in the Gettysburg College Tip-Off tournament. Wittenberg saw impressive performances from some familiar faces, while the youthful roster fell on a last second three-pointer to Alvernia on Friday night. The Tigers were dominant at times, but Alvernia was able to send a prayer through the bottom of the net with five seconds remaining to take a late lead, sending the Tigers to an 0-1 start.

GAME BREAKDOWN

  • The Tigers trailed by eight going into the half, as sophomore guard Ryan Gallimore produced 13 first-half points, including three three-pointers.  
  • Gallimore kept up his hot-shooting in the second half, as the Tigers trailed 45-50 with 10:58 remaining in the game after another triple.
  • A Chad Roy layup put the Tigers ahead at 53-52 with 8:05 remaining in the season opener.
  • Wittenberg and Alvernia would go back and forth, finding themselves tied at 55, 57 and 64 before crunch time.
  • As time wound down, Alvernia sent home a three pointer from way beyond the three-point line, taking a 67-64 lead.
  • After the Alvernia prayer splashed through the net, one of the oppositions players ran out on the court, as the officials called a technical foul, sending Gallimore to the line for two free-throws.
  • Gallimore made both free-throws, as the Tigers trailed 67-66.
  • The Tigers ran an inbounds play from the Alvernia base-line for the last play of the game, as the Tigers second pass that was intended for a wide open layup was picked off, sealing the deal for Alvernia.

  • Gallimore stole the show offensively for the Tigers, as the sophomore recorded a career high 28 points on 10 of 16 shooting, including six three-pointers.
  • Roy chipped in 14 points for the red and white, including three rebounds and three assists.
