Men's Basketball Continues NCAC Hot Streak Against Allegheny

MEADVILLE, Pennsylvania—The Tigers men's basketball team made the long trek to Allegheny College for another NCAC matchup Saturday afternoon. The Tigers took a three game winning streak into Allegheny and return home with their streak up to four. Wittenberg was able to use stifling defense all night to get the 67-52 victory. The road victory moves Wittenberg to 12-5 overall on the season, and 7-3 in NCAC play.

GAME BREAKDOWN

  • The Tigers got off to another hot-start from the field Saturday afternoon, starting the game on a 13-4 run.
  • Wittenberg's lead grew to as many as 14 in the first half, after Chad Roy (Toledo, Ohio/Holland Springfield) banked in a layup to make the game 34-20.
  • The halftime score favored the Tigers 43-32 heading into the break.
  • The fast start carried over into the second-half, as Zach Brashear (Maineville, Ohio / Kings) turned a steal into a fastbreak layup to push the Tiger lead to 15, 55-40.
  • Wittenberg was in total control in the second-half, as a pair of Cody Phillippi (Xenia, Ohio/Xenia) free-throws sealed the deal for Wittenberg, 67-52.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • From the floor, Wittenberg shot 50% in the first-half and 42% for the game.
  • The Tigers also connected on 38% of their three-point attempts in the game, as Landon Hormann (West Liberty, Ohio/Salem), Phillippi, and Jaelin Williams (Springfield, Ohio/Shawnee) all connected on two long-balls piece.
  • Wittenberg's defense shined all afternoon, resulting in 19 points off of Gator turnovers.

KEY STATS

  • Williams, 14, Phillippi, 13, and Hormann, 10, all managed double-digit scoring outings in the NCAC victory.
  • Wittenberg flourished getting the ball into the paint Saturday afternoon, resulting in 22 points in the paints and an excellent rebounding performance, highlighted by Shane Edwards' (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) seven boards.
  • The Tigers come home with a four game  winning streak that started January 13 at DePauw.

FROM THE BENCH

  • "This was just a really good hard road win a long way from home. We played fairly solid throughout the game and got what we came for…The biggest part of it was the job we did defensively," said Coach Brown.

UP NEXT

  • Wittenberg returns to action in Springfield January 27, as the NCAC schedule marches on, when the home team takes on Wabash at 7:30p.m.
