Tigers Stumble At Home Against DePauw

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - For the second time in a month, the Wittenberg Tigers were defeated by a surprising margin by North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) rival DePauw, which came into Pam Evans Smith Arena and pulled away for a 71-49 victory.

The good news for both sets of Tigers is that Ohio Wesleyan lost to Wabash, putting the three teams in a tie for second place in the league standings, two games behind preseason favorite Wooster with three games to play. Wittenberg heads to Wooster for a game on Saturday, Feb. 15, with records of 17-5 overall and 11-4 in the NCAC.

DePauw upended Wittenberg on its home floor on Jan. 15 by a score of 72-46, and the recipe was similar in Round 2 in the 2013-14 season between the two teams. In the first match-up, DePauw became the first team this season to outrebound Wittenberg, and the visiting Tigers did the job on the boards in the second game as well, pulling down two more caroms than Wittenberg.

While the rebounding was the biggest story on Jan. 15, when DePauw held a commanding 16-rebound advantage, the visiting Tigers' shooting was the key difference in the second meeting. DePauw blistered the nets at a 52 percent clip over the opening 20 minutes and followed that up by making 18-of-30 shots in the second half (60 percent). DePauw made 7-of-14 from three-point range as well.

At the other end, Wittenberg couldn't find the range in either half, finishing at just 31.5 percent from the field. Just one homestanding Tiger finished the game in double figures as senior Zack Leahy (Rossford, Ohio/Rossford) contributed 11 points.

Senior Scott Masin (New Carlisle, Ohio/Bethel) added nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds, in addition to two blocked shots and two steals. Junior Sam Collins (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) added nine points, six rebounds and two blocks.
