TORONTO, Ontario — The Wittenberg's men's basketball team wrapped up its preseason Canadia Training Trip with a convincing win over the University of Western Ontario by a score of 83-51. Western Ontario has 40,000 students and had defeated Transylvania University (Ky.), an NCAA Division III rival of Wittenberg's, the previous night.

The Tigers played outstanding team defense as the Mustangs shot a paltry 29.7 percent from the field and outrebounded Western by 12. In addition, Western Ontario scored just 14 points in the first half as the Tigers took a commanding 39-14 lead into the locker room at intermission. Senior Alex Brandt (Lewis Center, Ohio/Olentangy) had an outstanding game as he led the team in scoring with 21 points, while also pulling down six rebounds. Sophomore Scott Masin (Tipp City, Ohio/Bethel) was outstanding off the bench and was just one rebound short of a double-double as he scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Sophomore Steven Newell (Dayton, Ohio/Northmont) chipped in 10 points while knocking down three of the Tigers' four three-point field goals.

"We played absolutely lights-out on the defensive end of the court," said Head Coach Bill Brown. "While we could never take complete credit for a team shooting only 29 percent from the field, there is no question that our players did an outstanding job at taking scoring opportunities around the basket completely away on this night.

"That, coupled with a dominating performance from our big men, and that was the game. For some hard competitors, it was just an excellent way to wrap up the trip."
