Wilmington Outlasts Grove City In Zimmerman Memorial Classic Women's Consolation Game

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wilmington Quakers outscored Grove City 7-2 in overtime to pull out a 66-61 victory in the consolation game of the 2009 Charles B. Zimmerman Memorial Classic, hosted by Wittenberg University.

The Quakers, who lost to Case Western in the first round on Tuesday, evened their record at 5-5 heading into the new year. The Wolverines, who lost to host Wittenberg in the first round, are now 5-6 on the 2009-10 campaign.

Wilmington held the advantage through the early part of the game before Grove City rallied to take a five-point lead into the locker room at halftime. The lead swelled to nine points on two separate occasions before the Quakers rallied with an 11-point run that turned a 48-39 deficit into a 50-48 advantage. The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the way in regulation, with Grove City missing a short shot just before the buzzer that would have won the game.

In overtime, it was all Wilmington, starting with a short jumper by Kortney Kin 42 seconds into the frame. After Grove City tied it, Kin hit another jumper to give the Quakers the lead and the team's defense did the rest. Wilmington hit just 3-of-6 free throws in the final two minutes, but it was enough against a Wolverine team that missed its last 11 shots from the field over the last four minutes.

Kin finished with 23 points to lead both teams in scoring, with many of her baskets coming off feeds from point guard Amy Bricker, who set a tournament record with 11 assists in the game. Bricker also had seven assists in the first round game, giving her a tournament-record 18 in the tournament overall.

Grove City was paced by Christine Slater, who turned in a monster game with 16 points, 15 rebounds and four assists. Krista Beechy also finished with a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds to go along with a team-high six assists.
