The Ohio Northern University Polar Bears rebounded to capture
third place in the Kiwanis-Wittenberg Tip-Off Classic with an ugly
49-38 victory over Brockport State. The Bears evened out their
early-season record at 1-1, while Brockport, an NCAA Division III
team a year ago, fell to 0-2.
Both teams played as if there was a lid on the basket, particularly
in the first half when they matched one another with 22 percent
shooting from the floor (6-of-27). For the game, ONU wound up at 28
percent from the field, including a woeful 1-of-10 from three-point
range, while the Eagles finished up at 26 percent from the field,
including 28 percent from three-point range. Perhaps the key stat
of the game was free throw shooting as the Bears hit 18-of-22 from
the charity stripe, while Brockport was below 50 percent at
6-of-14.
The Polar Bears, who slowly pulled away from a 19-19 halftime tie
to capture the victory, were paced by Jodi Brown's 11 points and
nine rebounds and Kendra Bailey's nine points and 14 rebounds.
Bailey was named to the all-tournament team.
Brockport, which lost 77-44 to eventual champion Hope on Friday in
the semifinals, was paced by Mary Ahrens with 11 points, three
rebounds, two assists and three steals. Meghan Squires added five
points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
