    It was another outstanding season for the Wittenberg University Tiger men's basketball team. Wittenberg finished 20-6 overall and 14-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, good for second place.

    In breaking down the Allegheny/Wittenberg North Coast Athletic Conference tournament semifinal boxscore, it is evident that statistics do lie. The Wittenberg Tigers dominated the rebounding category 40-26, made 10 more shots while shooting 52 percent from the field (compared to 38 percent for Allegheny) and also hit 80 percent of their free throw attempts. The difference in a 73-72 Allegheny upset was three-point shooting as the Gators hit an NCAC tournament record 13 from beyond the arc and free throw shooting as the Gators made 18-of-21, including six straight in the final 2:51 of the game.

That was the task that stood before the Wittenberg Tigers and, for the second time in four nights, the Tigers were up to the task as they dispatched the visiting Denison Big Red 80-74 in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament Quarterfinals.

    The Wittenberg Tigers finished off the 2002-03 regular season with a full head of steam, defeating the visiting Denison Big Red 75-51 to clinch second place in the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference tournament. The win improved Wittenberg to 19-5 overall and 14-2 in the NCAC, while Denison, which will make a return trip to Springfield on Tuesday for the first round of the conference tourney, fell to 9-16 overall and 7-9 in the NCAC.

    The Wittenberg University men's basketball team sent a few messages last week. The first was that the Tigers are very much alive and kicking at the right time of the season as they walloped Earlham 82-39 on Wednesday in what was expected to be a difficult road test. Then on Saturday, the Tigers let the league-leading College of Wooster Fighting Scots know that they were still a factor in the NCAC regular season race with a 61-55 win at home.

    The Wittenberg Tigers did what they had to do against a scrappy, undermanned, but determined host Hiram Terriers squad - they survived. The Tigers outlasted Hiram, which rallied from a 26-point deficit a week earlier to upset Ohio Wesleyan in the same gym, by a final of 78-62, but only after fending off a 16-0 Terrier run that sliced the lead down to five points midway through the second half.

    The Wittenberg Tigers didn't play their best, but they played well enough down the stretch to pull out a crucial home game against the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops and claim a 68-58 victory on Wednesday night at the HPER Center before a crowd of 645 fans. The win improved the Tigers to 14-5 overall and 9-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, keeping them within striking distance of first-place Wooster.

    To those who watch the North Coast Athletic Conference closely, Saturday's game between the Wittenberg Tigers and the Allegheny Gators was assured to be a difficult one for the visitors, despite the fact that Wittenberg had won seven in a row in the series and had claimed back-to-back conference championships the last two years. The Gators may be in the middle of the conference pack in 2002-03 but they are clearly a team on the rise, and they broke through for their biggest win of the year 66-63 over Wittenberg.

    The Wittenberg University Tigers aren't used to losing. As is so often the case, following a loss the Tigers made a significant statement, crushing the visiting Earlham Quakers, 82-46, just four days after losing at archrival Wooster.

    The Wittenberg Tigers played a near perfect first half of basketball, and even after struggling for nearly 15 minutes of the second half, they were within striking distance at 62-58. But the plague of turnovers and ill-advised shots that helped vaporize a nine-point Tiger halftime lead continued and the ninth-ranked College of Wooster Fighting Scots ended the game on a 19-6 run to take control of the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season race with an 81-64 victory.

    The Wittenberg University Tigers got the job done again on Wednesday night, using a balanced scoring attack and 53 percent shooting from the field to oust fellow North Coast Athletic Conference unbeaten Ohio Wesleyan University, 73-64. The win was a key one for the Tigers, who remain in a first place tie with the College of Wooster at 5-0 in the NCAC, while OWU dropped to 4-1.
  • Wittenberg defeats Hiram to remain perfect in NCAC play

    The Wittenberg University Tigers essentially took care of business on Saturday afternoon against an undermanned but scrappy Hiram College team. The Tigers played a strong first half in moving out to a 21-point halftime lead and cruised through the second half to eventually claim a 93-75 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over the Terriers.

    This was a game that Wittenberg University, a potential national title contender and the two-time defending North Coast Athletic Conference regular season champion, was supposed to win. In the end, the scoreboard reflected that, exhibiting an 81-66 Tiger victory over winless host Kenyon, but it was anything but easy.
  • Wittenberg wallops Oberlin to start new year off right

    At the 10:51 mark of the first half, the visiting Oberlin Yeomen scored on a lay-up to tie the game at 11-11. The next time Oberlin scored a basket, it was at the 18:25 mark of the second half and it made the score 53-13 in favor of two-time defending North Coast Athletic Conference regular season champion Wittenberg University. In between, Wittenberg outscored the Yeomen 42-0.
  • Wittenberg defeats Case Western Reserve 72-57

    The way sophomore Andy Bucheit (Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) is shooting right now, it only makes sense that his coach is going to find more opportunities to put the ball in his hands. Against the Case Western Reserve University Spartans, Bucheit was outstanding in his first career start, canning 9-of-12 shots from the field, including another blistering performance from three-point range, as he led the Tigers to a 72-57 victory.
  • Wittenberg falls on the road to hot-shooting Ohio Northern

    Coming off a big win over the defending national champion Otterbein Cardinals 12 days previous, perhaps the Wittenberg University Tigers were due for a letdown. A more plausible explanation, however, is that Ohio Northern reached up and grabbed the 82-62 victory after a difficult start to the 2002-03 season.
