Wittenberg Men Avenge Early-Season Loss

The Wittenberg University men's basketball team exacted a measure of revenge on Saturday, taking down a young, athletic outfit from Ohio Wesleyan University by an 87-79 margin.

On the men's side, the Tigers jumped out to a double-digit lead in the opening minutes of Saturday's game, played a strong first half and then weathered a record-setting barrage of three-point shots by Ohio Wesleyan late in the game to capture the win. Senior forward Ryan Taylor (Waynesfield, Ohio/Goshen) led all scorers with 25 points in the game, including a huge three-pointer in the late going that all but sealed things.

The Bishops, who defeated Wittenberg 94-83 on Dec. 6 in Delaware, were nothing short of awesome from three-point range. OWU hit 19-of-42 shots from behind the arc, record totals of three-pointers made and attempted by a Wittenberg opponent. The Bishops were 12-of-24 on threes in the second half, led primarily by senior guard Jimmy Francis, who hit all five of his treys and 7-of-8 shots overall. He was one of two Bishops' players who finished with 19-point totals.

Joining Taylor in double-digits for the Tigers were senior center Chris Fillmore (Barberton, Ohio/Barberton), junior guard Greg Rustad (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood), and junior center Brian Gratsch (Madeira, Ohio/Madeira). Wittenberg outrebounded its visitors by a 43-26 margin in the game, and the Tigers also held OWU's leading scorer, Travis Schwab, to two points.

Wittenberg is now 9-2 overall this year and 3-1 in the NCAC. OWU dropped to 3-9 overall but 3-1 in the conference.
