Tigers Drop Overtime Decision To Battling Bishops

Springfield, Ohio- Wittenberg University field hockey team mounted a roaring comeback on Wednesday evening, erasing a three-goal deficit against the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University at Edwards-Maurer field. After putting up a late defensive effort to begin the overtime period, the Tigers fell 5-4 to the visiting Battling Bishops in the NCAC showdown. 

Game Breakdown

Allison Ormsby put the Tigers on the board at the end of the first half on a goal assisted by Isabella Wagner, cutting the Battle Bishops lead down to 3-1. The Tigers kept the momentum rolling, striking first in the second half and chipping away at the Ohio Wesleyan lead, as Flora van den Borne slotted the second Tiger goal just five minutes into the second half. Veronica Carrow brought the game back to even in the 48th minute, scoring the third Tiger goal and her second goal of the season at the 48th minute. After Ohio Wesleyan took the lead back with 11:43 remaining, van den Borne kept the Tigers hopes alive in the final moments of the second half scoring her second goal of the night, knotting the game back up at 4-4 and forcing overtime. The back and forth effort between the two sides played out during the overtime period as one final offensive push by the Tigers was unable to make it through the back defensive line of the Battling Bishops. Ohio Wesleyan tallied their final goal in the 74th minute to take the win. 

By the Numbers

The Battling Bishops led the shot margin at the end of the first period 10-7. However, the Tigers would lead the penalty corners category 6-3 through the first half. Wittenberg led the second-period shot count 9-3 and would hold a narrow margin throughout the game 17-15. The Tigers would only get two chances at penalty corners through the second half and overtime period still leading the tally 8-5 at the end of the game.

The Tigers will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 when they travel to Earlham for an 11:00 AM NCAC showdown with the Quakers.
