NCAC Play Opens Up for Field Hockey with 3-2 Loss to DePauw

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio—After a big non-conference weekend for the Wittenberg field hockey program, the Tigers switched gears to focus on NCAC play. Making the trip to Springfield on Wednesday night was DePauw University, as these Tigers entered the opening conference matchup with a 1-1 record. Wittenberg allowed DePauw to jump out to an early lead, but came roaring back in the second-half, knotting things up at 2-2 early on. Despite the late comeback, DePauw added one late goal to return to Greencastle with a 3-2 lead. The loss moves the Tigers to 1-2  and 0-1 in NCAC play, while DePauw moves to 2-1 and 1-0 in NCAC play in 2016.

 

GAME BREAKDOWN

  • Wittenberg got off to a slow start on Wednesday, allowing the visiting Tiger's to jump out to a 2-0 lead at the break.
  • Coming out of the half composed, is was the Tigers of Wittenberg jumping on DePauw, as Audrey Coler netted back-to-back goals in a six-minute span.
  • Coler's first goal came unassisted, as the junior maneuvered her way through the teeth of DePauw's defense to get the home-team on the board early in the second half.
  • Before DePauw knew what hit them, Riley Trexler caught a pass from Maddie Goelz in front of the net, and snuck a slick shot past the DePauw goalie to knot things up at 2-2 with at 26:31 remaining in the game.  
  • Halfway through the second half, DePauw broke the tie with a two-on-one pass and score, taking the lead 3-2.
  • Wittenberg managed to produce two quality shots late, but could not produce the equalizer, dropping the NCAC match 3-2.

KEY STATS

  • Trexler led the Tigers with five shots on goal and six shots total, including the tying goal.
  • Josefien van den Berg slated all 70 minutes in net for the Tigers, making 9 saves.

  • The Tigers take a break from NCAC play as they welcome Concordia University of Wisconsin to Edwards-Maurer field on Sunday. Game time is set for 11 AM.
