GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Wittenberg Tigers rallied to within one goal early in the second half, but DePauw pulled away in the end for a 5-2 victory in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) opener for both teams.

The loss dropped the visiting Tigers to 0-4 overall on the season, while the host Tigers improved to 2-1. The two teams will meet again on Saturday, Oct. 10, this time in Springfield on Wittenberg's home turf.

DePauw jumped out to a 2-0 lead midway through the first half and maintained that lead through halftime. Nine minutes into the second half, however, sophomore Maddie Goelz (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) pulled Wittenberg to within one goal.

After DePauw answered with a score, Goelz provided the assist on a goal by senior Andrea Mattingly (Louisville, Ky./Mercy Academy) in the 54th minute to again draw the visiting Tigers within one score. DePauw put the game away over the final six minutes with a pair of goals.

The host Tigers outshot Wittenberg 17-9 and held a commanding 14-2 advantage in penalty corners. Goelz led the visiting Tigers with four shots in the game, while senior Paige Vanerstrom (Pittsburg, Pa./North Allegheny) contributed three attempts on frame.

In goal, junior Laura Jansing (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) was credited with nine saves.

Wittenberg will jump right back into action on Saturday with a game against Rhodes, also at DePauw.
