Three Unanswered Second-Half Goals Send Sewanee Past Tigers

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Wittenberg Tigers took a one-goal into halftime, but host Sewanee scored three times in a 16-minute span of the second half to pull out a 4-3 victory.

The loss dropped Wittenberg to 0-3 on the season, including a pair of losses at Sewanee. On Saturday, the Tigers lost 3-1 to Washington & Lee. Sewanee improved to 2-0 so far in 2015.

The final team stats showed a dead-even contest, as Wittenberg finished with 21 shotsand Sewanee ended with 20, and the Tigers topped the host team in penalty corners at 11-10. The two teams even split six cautions evenly, with each team drawing three cards in the game.

Wittenberg opened the scoring with two goals in a span of 57 seconds. Freshman Isabella Wagner (Hilliard, Ohio/Bradley) found the back of the cage in the 30th minute off a feed from sophomore Riley Trexler (Louisville, Ky./Atherton), and then Trexler scored a goal of her own after receiving a pass from sophomore Macenzie Reed (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame).

However, Sewanee pulled one goal back with 3:01 left before halftime, and then the host Tigers broke the game open with the aforementioned three scores in the second half. Wittenberg senior Paige Vanerstrom (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) scored in the 66th minute, but the visiting Tigers were not able to find the equalizer.

Sophomore Audrey Coler (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) led Wittenberg's offense with five shots, while Vanerstrom added four. Junior goalkeeper Laura Jansing (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) was credited with 10 saves at the other end of the field.
