OBERLIN, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers completed the opening weekend of their 2014 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) season with a 4-0 victory over Oberlin.

Coupled with the Tigers' 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Wooster less than 24 hours earlier, Wittenberg stands atop the early season NCAC standings with a 2-0 league record. Overall, Wittenberg has now evened its ledger at 3-3.

All four Wittenberg goals came in a 25-minute span of the first half, and the Tiger defense did the rest in recording its first shutout of the 2014 campaign. The sophomore goalkeeping tandem of Sarah Brownell (Ocnomowoc, Wis./University Lake School) and Laura Jansing (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) split duties between the pipe equally, with Brownell coming up with five saves in the first half but Jansing keeping a clean sheet without facing a shot on goal.

Offensively, senior Beth Warning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) started things off with an unassisted goal at the 3:10 mark of the first half. Junior Paige Vanerstrom (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) added a goal in the 17th minute off a penalty corner, as sophomore Michelle Murray (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and senior Casey Fry (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) were both credited with assists on the play.

Freshman Riley Trexler (Louisville, Ky./Atherton) rounded out the scoring with a pair of goals just 1:26 apart. Her first scoring effort was the result of an assist from Vanerstrom.

Oberlin, which was outshot 32-8 in the game, dropped to 0-3 on the season, including an 0-2 mark in the NCAC. Wittenberg also held a commanding advantage in penalty corner opportunities, as the Tigers attempted 15 compared to two for Oberlin.
