Tigers Open Season With Hard-Fought Loss At W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Wittenberg field hockey team opened the 2014 campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Washington & Jefferson on the road.

Senior midfielder/defender Kelly McLean (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook South) scored her first collegiate goal in the 64th minute when a shot from distance deflected into the cage.

At the other end, sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Brownell (Ocnomowoc, Wis./University Lake School) played well in front of the Tigers' cage, posting 12 saves against two goals.

McClean was one of four Tigers with two shots, a list that also included senior Beth Warning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame), freshman Riley Trexler (Louisville, Ky./Atherton) and senior Kim Loofbourrow (Prospect, Ky./Ballard).

The Presidents did all their scoring in the first 17 minutes of the game, tallying goals in the eighth minute and the 17th.

The Tigers return to Springfield for their home opener against Bethany (W.V.) on Sunday, August 31, at 1:00 p.m. in Edwards-Maurer Field.
