OBERLIN, Ohio - Sophomore Paige Vanerstrom (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) scored 4:18 into the second half, and Wittenberg's defense did the rest in a tense 1-0 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) victory over Oberlin.

The win moved the Tigers to 6-9 overall and 4-6 in the league and in the hunt for the fourth and final spot in the 2013 NCAC Tournament. Oberlin lost for the second time this year to Wittenberg to drop to 3-9 overall and 2-7 in the NCAC.

Oberlin held a 17-9 advantage in shots, but none of the Yeowomen's offerings on the Wittenberg cage hit paydirt. Vanerstrom led the Tigers in shots with three in the game, with her game-winner coming after a nice build-up that included junior Megan Loofbourrow (Prospect, Ky./Ballard) and an assist from junior Beth Warning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame).

Junior Casey Fry (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) also was credited with three shots in the game for Wittenberg.

Defensively, the freshmen goalkeeping tandem of Sarah Brownell (Ocnomowoc, Wis./University Lake School) and Laura Jansing (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) split the 70 minutes in goal. Brownell made four saves and Jansing made six, in addition to a key defensive save off the stick of junior Kelly McLean (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook South).

Wittenberg has four NCAC games left in the regular season, starting with a road trip to Kenyon on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
