Tigers Rally Past Wooster To Open NCAC Schedule

SPRINGFIELD - The Wittenberg Tigers opened their 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) schedule with a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over rival Wooster.

The win broke Wooster's five-game winning streak in the long-standing rivalry. More importantly, it moved Wittenberg to 2-3 on the young season and kicked off the league slate in the best way possible. Wooster fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC.

The Scots jumped on top with a goal in the 15th minute, but the Tigers, who were shut out in three of their first four games of the 2013 season while playing some of the top teams in the nation, battled back to tie the game. Junior Beth Warning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) to a feed from junior Casey Fry (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) and beat the Wooster goalkeeper at the 31:04 mark of the first half.

Ten minutes into the second half, Wittenberg took its first lead on a goal by freshman Eva van Dijkman (Den Haag, Netherlands/Christelijk Gymnasium Sorghvliet) off an assist from Warning. Wooster came up with an equalizer at the 60:58 mark, but the Tigers picked up the game-winner from junior Megan Loofbourrow (Prospect, Ky./Ballard) just 1:44 later. Van Dijkman contributed the assist on the tally.

Warning then put the game out of reach in the 67th minute with a goal, again off a feed from Fry.

For the game, Wittenberg held a 19-12 advantage in shots and a 7-3 edge in penalty corners. In goal, freshman Sarah Brownell (Ocnomowoc, Wis./University Lake School) made four saves while going the distance to pick up her first winning collegiate decision.
