Three Wittenberg Field Hockey Standouts Earn All-Region Honors

 Springfield, Ohio — Wittenberg University field hockey standouts Elizabeth Dwyer, class of 2012 from St. Louis, Mo., Jenny Schaafsma, class of 2012 from Grand Rapids, Mich., and Kellen Morrissey, class of 2013 from Aurora, Colo., have earned 2011 All-Great Lakes Region honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).

was a first-team selection, while Schaafsma and Morrissey both claimed spots on the second team. All three will now be considered for NFHCA All-America honors, which will be announced on Monday, Nov. 21.

Dwyer, who will play in the prestigious NFHCA Division III Senior Game at 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 at Nichols College, led the Tigers offensively in 2011 with 17  goals, two of which were game-winners. She added five assists, the second-highest total on the team, to finish with a team-high 39 points. Dwyer finished the regular season ranked second in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) in goals and total points.

For her three-year career in the Red & White, Dwyer finished with 45 goals to rank fifth in program history. She added 16 career assists to become just the fifth Tiger ever to amass more than 100 career points. Dwyer was a first-team All-NCAC honoree in 2009 and a second-team selection in 2010 (the 2011 team will be announced Friday, Nov. 18). She has earned first-team all-region in 2009 and 2011 to go along with second-team in 2010.

 Schaafsma started all 18 games in 2011, making 131 saves with a goals against average of 1.51. She ranked third in the conference in both saves and saves percentage, while ranking fourth in goals against average. For her career, Schaafsma finished with 357 saves and 12 shutouts while earning first-team All-NCAC in 2009 and 2010 and second-team all-region in 2010. She also earned first-team All-NCAC in women's lacrosse in 2011.

Morrissey makes her first appearance on the all-region honor roll after claiming second-team All-NCAC honors a year ago in field hockey to go along with first-team all-conference in women's lacrosse in 2011. She contributed three goals and three assists to the field hockey attack from her midfield position in 2011.

Wittenberg concluded the 2011 season with records of 9-9 and 7-6 in the NCAC after bowing out of the NCAC Tournament with a 2-0 semifinal loss to regular season champion Denison. Dwyer, Schaafsma and Morrissey were all key members of Wittenberg's 2010 team that earned a conference-record 10th NCAC title with a program-best 11 wins.
