Tigers Open Home Slate With Shutout Of Battling Bishops

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Wittenberg field hockey team improved to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the Northc Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) with a 2-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan in their first game at Edwards-Maurer Field in 2011.

The Tigers tallied a goal in each period while the defensive unit posted a shutout against 18 Ohio Wesleyan shots.

Senior goalkeeper Jenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) made a season-best 12 saves to preserve the shutout for the Tigers. Freshman Anne Poolman (Haren, The Netherlands/Maartens) got into the save column as well with a key defensive stop in the second period.

Wittenberg shot 11 times throughout the game, led by freshman Beth Warning (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) and sophomore Mallory Skrobot (Dublin, Ohio/Watterson) with three each.

Warning put the Tigers ahead with an unassisted goal in the 12th minute on a losse ball near the net, and senior Elizabeth Dwyer (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue) achieved the final margin with a drive down the right side of the field in the 43rd minute, beating the goalkeeper with a shot to the far post.

Tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 18th, the Tigers will make up a game at Oberlin that was postponed from Sept. 10th due to field conditions. The Oberlin College athletics website (www.goyeo.com) will provide live statistics for the contest, which begins at 2 p.m.
