Tigers Fall At NCAA Division II No. 9 Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Wittenberg Tigers stepped out of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) for a final time in the 2010 regular season, but they were defeated by the ninth ranked team in all of NCAA Division II, Bellarmine, by a 3-1 count.

The loss snapped an eight-game winning streak and dropped the Tigers to 10-3 overall, heading into an important week of NCAC games at Ohio Wesleyan and Oberlin. Bellarmine celebrated its Senior Night by improving to 12-3.

The Knights led 2-0 at halftime after scoring goals less than four minutes apart midway through the first half. Bellarmine put the game out of reach with a score in the 60th minute, with Wittenberg rallying on a goal by senior Boo Vernon (Lake Bluff, Ill./Cushing Academy) in the 63rd minute. Junior Elizabeth Dwyer (St. Louis, Mo./LaDue) was credited with the assist on the penalty corner play.

Bellarmine outshot the visiting Tigers 21-5 and held a 12-6 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. Junior goalkeeper Jenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) made eight saves, while junior Anna Martin (Louisville, Ky./Sacred Heart) was credited with a defensive save.
