Tigers Earn First Shutout With Win Over Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, Ohio - The Wittenberg field hockey team manufactured two goals off penalty corners and added a third to take down North Coast Athletic Conference opponent Ohio Wesleyan 3-0 on the road Thursday evening. The Tigers earned their first winning conference record of the season by moving to 3-2 with the win, and 5-2 overall.

The Tigers, who defeated Ohio Wesleyan for the first time in two years, saw a familiar combo of scorers, as junior forward Boo Vernon (Lake Bluff, Ill./Cushing Academy) and sophomore forward Elizabeth Dwyer (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue)both found the back of the cage, Vernon for the 10th time this season and Dwyer for the fourth. Coming out of the backfield to round out the scoring was junior defenderMeredith Price (Highland Park, Ill./North Shore Country Day), who earned her second goal of the season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) guarded the net all night, earning the Tigers their first shutout of the 2009 campaign with three saves. Junior defender Marisa Myers (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) helped out with a defensive save as well.

Price and Vernon each scored off of first half penalty corners, Vernon off of a Price assist, to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage heading to the break. Dwyer added her goal just 54 seconds into the second half to bring the score to its final margin of 3-0. The goal came off the rebound of a saved shot from junior defender Kelly Herde (Louisville, Ky./Assumption).

The Tigers next suit up on Saturday, Sept. 26, in a Family Weekend matchup with Salisbury set for 3 p.m. Catch the game online with both free live video and audio, as well as live stats online on the Tiger Sports Network on the Wittenberg athletics Web site.
