Tigers Defeat Ohio Wesleyan For Fourth Straight Win

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg field hockey team powered past the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops by a final score of 4-2, capping off their fourth-straight North Coast Athletic Conference and overall win to move to 9-3 overall and 7-2 in the NCAC.

The Tigers took a 1-0 advantage 20 minutes into the game when junior forward Boo Vernon (Lake Bluff, Ill./Cushing Academy) found the cage on a Hannah Schecklehoff (Blacklick, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) feed. Ohio Wesleyan answered with a tying goal eight minutes later, but Wittenberg carried a 2-1 lead into halftime thanks to another Vernon goal just one second before the period closed. This time, the goal came on an assist from freshman forward Kellen Morrissey (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill).

Opening the second half, it took just 33 seconds for the Red & White to score again, as sophomore forward Elizabeth Dwyer (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue) broke through the Bishop defense, pushed towards the goal and scored on a breakaway opportunity. Ohio Wesleyan put one more on the board before Wittenberg attined the final margin on another Dwyer goal, coming on a pass from Vernon.

Vernon's two goals pushed her to 16 on the year and 53 in her career. In 2009, she has scored in every game since the opener, making it 11 straight.

The Tigers travel to Kenyon next for a 4 p.m. engagement on Thursday, Oct. 15.
