Wittenberg Rolls To Fifth Straight Win

GAMBIER, Ohio - The Wittenberg field hockey team won their fifth-straight game and their seventh-straight North Coast Athletic Conference match with a 3-2 edging of Kenyon to soar to 8-2 in league action and 10-3 overall. The Tigers are now squarely in first place in the NCAC, moving a game ahead of the College of Wooster with the win.

The Tigers were led by the usual suspects, with team-scoring leaders Boo Vernon (Lake Bluff, Ill./Cushing Academy),Tori Casanta (Mason, Ohio/Cor Jesu Academy) and Elizabeth Dwyer (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue) each nabbing a goal.

Casanta and Vernon each tallied an assist in the game. Tiger netminder Jenny Schaafsma (Grand Rapids, Mich,/East Grand Rapids) notched three saves against two goals allowed.

The Tigers scored first 20 minutes into the game and held the lead until Kenyon evened it up seven minutes later. Wittenberg scored the next two goals to take the lead permanently, though Kenyon added one with under three minutes to go in the game.

Wittenberg plays again on the road on Monday, Oct. 19, at Houghton at 4 p.m.
