Tigers Defense Comes Up with First Shutout of the Season

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Wittenberg Tigers took a break from conference play as they entertained Houghton College on Homecoming weekend, with the Tigers coming away with a 2-0 victory. Sophomore Kelley Herde (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) scored her first goal of 2008 as the Tigers moved above .500 for the first time since the opening weekend of the season.

Sophomore Tori Casanta (Mason, Ohio/Cor Jesu Academy) opened up the scoring early in the second half, continuing her torrid pace towards the Wittenberg record books. She now has 20 goals on the year. Ten minutes later, in the 50th minute, Herde collected an assist from Casanta and doubled the Tiger advantage.

The pair of goals would be all the Tigers would need, as the defense proved to be one of the best stories of the night. For the first time this season, the Tigers managed to pick up a shutout. Freshman goalkeeper Alyssa Ashbaugh (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls) got the win with two saves in the cage, while the defense in front of her limited the Highlanders to only those two attempts on goal.

The victory kicks off a busy weekend for Diana Goggins and her squad, as they travel to Oberlin College to face the Yeowomen on Saturday, Oct. 11 for a 2 p.m. start.
