Tigers Wrap Up Conference Slate With Win At Earlham

RICHMOND, Ind. - Even with the recent cold weather signifying the beginning of winter, the Tiger women's field hockey team has been on a hot streak, winning six of their last eight, a streak continued by a 2-0 win over Earlham College. A pair of Boo Vernon (Lake Bluff, Ill./Cushing Academy) goals sealed up the win, wrapping up Wittenberg's NCAC regular season with a 7-5 mark.

On the heels of a tough loss to Kenyon this past weekend, the Tigers looked to ensure yet another season above .500. Vernon did her part in the first half, punching in the icebreaker ten minutes before the intermission. Then, 10 minutes before full time, the Tiger striker notched her 18th goal of the campaign, this one coming on an assist from fellow sophomore Kelley Herde (Louisville, Ky./Assumption).

The defense also made its mark on the contest, as Wittenberg picked up its third shutout of the season and the first for sophomore goalkeeper Liana Began (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), who worked all 70 minutes in goal. The Tigers outshot the Quakers 12-1 and dominated in penalty corners by a 14-2 margin.

The win moves WIttenberg to 10-7 overall, as Diana Goggins' squad prepares for their final home match of 2008 when the Morrisville State Mustangs visit on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 10 a.m. for Wittenberg's send-off to their seniors.
