Short-Handed Tigers Fall Short In Tournament Finale

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Wittenberg Tigers put the finishing touches on a successful opening weekend trip to Maryland with a deceiving 3-1 loss to FDU-Florham in the third-place game of the 2008 Black-Eyed Susan Tournament at Stevenson University.

The Tigers, playing without 2007 third-team All-American Boo Vernon (Lake Bluff, Ill./Cushing Academy) due to injury, wound up fourth in the tourney after beating the host squad 5-4 on Saturday. FDU-Florham finished third and improved to 2-0 overall.

After winning a 5-4 shootout on Saturday, the Tigers rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit on Sunday thanks to a goal by sophomore forward Tori Casanta (Mason, Ohio/Cor Jesu Academy) at the 49:28 mark. Sophomore defender Meredith Price (Highland Park, Ill./North Shore Country Day) was credited with the assist.

However, FDU-Florham put the game away with a goal less than seven minutes before the final horn sounded. It was the third goal allowed by the Tiger defense and sophomore goalkeeper Liana Began (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson), who finished with five saves.

Overall, Wittenberg was outshot 11-7 in the game, including a 9-3 margin in the first half. FDU-Florham finished with 12 penalty corners to the Tigers' four.

Wittenberg heads back to the east coast again next weekend for a game at Mary Washington. Start time for that game is 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.
