Tigers Ride Early Goals To High-Scoring Win Over Denison

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - In their most prolific offensive outing of the season, Wittenberg poured in nine goals, including five in the first 13 minutes, en route to a 9-3 win over conference rival Denison.

Right out of the gate, the Tigers jumped all over the Big Red, tallying two goals in the first 90 seconds of the contest. Freshman Darcey Caciano (St. Louis, Mo./Kirkwood) broke the ice with a tally inside the first minute. From there, the attack continued, with sophomore Tori Casanta (Mason, Ohio/Cor Jesu Academy) punching in the first of three goals on the day. With her hat trick, Casanta continues to climb up the all-time goal scoring ranks in Tiger history, now having amassed 19 on the season.

In a five-goal first half, Wittenberg also got scores from sophomore Boo Vernon (Lake Bluff, Ill./Cushing Academy) and the first goal of 2008 for sophomore Meredith Price (Highland Park, Ill./North Shore Country Day).

The second 35 minutes saw more of the same, as the Tigers were unrelenting in their search for their third conference win of the campaign. Freshman Taylor Dawley (Bexley, Ohio/Bexley) got into the act with her first goal as a collegian in the second half. Sophomore Tori Vogelgesang (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) also helped the Tiger attack on penalty corners, while providing the primary back line defense for Wittenberg.

With the win, Wittenberg moves to 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, breaking a fourth-place tie with the Big Red. With Homecoming approaching, the Tigers will play on Friday night against NAIA squad Houghton College. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 at Edwards-Maurer Field.
