Wittenberg Tops Sewanee 2-1 On Late Goal

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - A breakaway goal in the waning moments by sophomore forward Boo Vernon (Lake Bluff, Ill./Cushing Academy) was the difference as the Wittenberg Tigers captured a 2-1 win over Sewanee in non-conference action at Edwards-Maurer Field.

The win pushed the Tigers back over .500 at 3-2 overall, while Sewanee dropped to 4-2.

Wittenberg got the best of action throughout the game, outshooting the visitors 20-2 in the first half and 28-10 overall. However, Sewanee made the most of a second-half penalty corner - one of just three in the game, compared to eight for Wittenberg - to tie it with less than 25 minutes remaining.

That's when Vernon finally got loose, taking a free ball in the midfield and working her past a defender and the Sewanee goalkeeper. The goal made a winner out of Tiger sophomore goalkeeper Liana Began (Solon, Ohio/Solon), who came up with nine saves.

Wittenberg's first goal was scored in the first half by sophomore forward Tori Casanta (Mason, Ohio/Cor Jesu Academy) off a feed from sophomore forward Hannah Scheckelhoff (Blacklick, Ohio/Columbus School for Girls).

The Tigers get right back at it Sunday with a key North Coast Athletic Conference game at Kenyon. Start time is scheduled for noon.
