Wittenberg Earns Share Of NCAC Title With Win Over Kenyon

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - Heading into the 2007 regular season finale against Kenyon College, the Wittenberg Tigers knew what they had to do: win, or risk missing out on the conference tournament. After playing a scoreless first half, in which Kenyon kept most of the pressure on the Wittenberg end, the momentum began to sway at the beginning of the second half.

From the onset of the second half, the Tigers applied pressure on the Kenyon defense, and with just seven minutes left to play that pressure paid off as freshman Tori Casanta (Mason, Ohio/Cor Jesu Academy) rattled the back of the cage. It was the only goal the Tigers would need to earn a berth in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Tournament. It was Casanta's fourth straight game with a goal and her 10th of the season, second-most on the team.

By defeating the Ladies, the Tigers clinched a share of the regular season NCAC championship for the first time since 2004. Kenyon, Wooster and Wittenberg finished with matching 8-4 NCAC records, but Wittenberg owns the tiebreakers and will thus host Oberlin on Wednesday, Oct. 31 in the first round of the tournament.
